The Mountain Katydid (Acripeza reticulata), belongs to the genus Elephantodeta, subfamily Phaneropterinae. They are found in eastern Australia woodland habitats. Their mottled brown colouration acts as camouflage, however when disturbed or in danger, they raise their wings revealing bands of red and blue on their abdomen.
This reactionis, known as “deimatic defence” or “startle display” is common across different groups of animals, such as frogs, cuttlefish and insects.
The term deimatic or dymantic originates from the Greek δειματόω (deimatóo), meaning “to frighten”
