A member of the commonly known group of Stag Beetles, Lissapterus obesus live above 950 m in altitude in the drier rainforests areas of the western Great Dividing Range, stretching from northern New South Wales to southern Queensland.
They preferred habitats, usually in or under logs on the forest floor and where the thick forest canopies block out the sun, providing a cool, humid rainforest environment. They like the layers upon layers of rotten leaves that cover the ground and which is where the larvae develop. The flightless adults emerge December–January, where they move slowly and seek mates.
An elusive species, Lissapterus obesus are rarely seen during the day, only venturing out of its hiding place at night to look for a mate. The species is known to have a powerful and the longest bite.
