The Austrothurgus species are a small group of bees commonly described as lithurgine bees (subfamily Lithurginae, tribe: Lithurgini).
They are robust looking black coloured bees (their head, thorax and abdomen), that have white to brown apical bands of setae on the terga. T6 of females is covered with reddish-brown setae (Gonzalez, Engel & Griswold, 2013).2,3,4
