The Burton’s Legless Lizard (Lialis burtonis) can sometimes be seen as you walk around the Alice Springs Desert Park. The one pictured here was about 40 cm in length.
Care should be taken, as they can easily be mistaken for snakes (always keep your distance from any thing that looks like a snake when wandering through the park).
Native to Australia, the Burton’s Legless Lizard lack forelegs and has only rudimentary hind legs (sometimes referred to as “legless lizards” and “snake-lizards”. Burton’s Legless Lizard have an elongated snout with a distinctive wedge-shaped head.
