Glenrowan > Siege | Shot | Self-guided Walk ◦

It was on the 28 June, 1880, when the Kelly Gang bailed up the townsfolk of Glenrowan in the Ann Jones Inn as part of their grand plan to create a Republic of North East Victoria. During the epic shoot out with the police, Ned’s brother Dan and two other gang members, Steve Hart and Joe Byrne, died. Wearing his unique hand-made armour, and in the final dramatic shootout, Ned sustained 28 gunshot wounds before finally been brought to the ground and captured.

When some upgrading and redevelopment of the Glenrowan area was being done, they uncovered remnants of the original fence that police stood behind during the siege.

This structure is a replica of the station building which stood on this exact site during the siege in 1880. It was where Ned received medical attention after he was shot and captured. He was then taken by special train to the gaol in Melbourne.

Pick up a copy of “An Easy Self-guided Walk Around the Glenrowan Siege Site” from the Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre and discover the notable spots of the actual siege sites through a self guided walk around the town. Total distance: 800 approximately metres. Time: allow 30 minutes plus.

  1. By standing at the top of the passenger ramp on the railway overpass, it is possible to overlook the whole siege site.
  2. Walk down the ramp onto the platform. This is the original structure where the special Police Train pulled in and unloaded on the morning of the siege in 1880.
  3. The station building is an exact replica of the one which was standing during the gun battle. Copied from original VIC Rail archive plans. It was where Ned received medical attention after he was captured.
  4. The Police bollards are sited on the edge of the creek (now a drain) where the blacktrackers and Police dived for cover when the shooting started.
  5. Cross over the stone bridge and you will  see a marker where a small pistol was found during earth works in 1997. It is believed to have been dropped during the siege.
  6. Ann Jone’s Inn — the Inn was totally burnt to the ground at the end of the siege. The only thing left standing was the sign. Our replica is an identical copy and is erected on the exact spot where the original sign stood.
  7. Go up the hill 30 metres behind the Inn site and turn right into Church Street. 50 metres along is another stone marker. Walk down the path to the exact spot where Ned was finally brought to the ground and captured.
