Adelaide Hills FungaMycena interrupta (Pixie’s Parasol)
Commonly known as the Pixie’s Parasol, the species Mycena interrupta is a mushroom found in South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and Queensland (although currently only known in Lamington National Park). It is also found in New Zealand, New Caledonia and Chile.
The Mycena interrupta caps range from 0.8 to 2 cm, and are a brilliant cyan blue colour (although unlike some other Mycena species, Mycena interrupta is not bioluminescent).
They are globose (having the form of a spherical, globe form) when emergent, then developing a broad convex shape as they mature, with the centre of the cap slightly depressed.
The stipe (the stipe is the stem or stalk-like feature supporting the cap of a mushroom) vary from 1 to 2 cm long and 0.1 to 0.2 cm thick. It is white and smooth. The gills are white and adnexed (reaching to the stem, but not attached to it), with blue margins.
The Mycena interrupta are found in small colonies on rotting, moist wood, particularly in rainforests, and in beech or eucalypt forests.
