There are places to relax and contemplate, is a photographers dream and a great place to escape to and for a day’s relaxation.
Within the garden are themed precincts, daffodil-strewn meadows and cool climate trees. During the different seasons through the year, you can experience the glorious colour palate of springs through to the riotous colours of autumn.
A beautiful space in the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden are the concentric circle of the Rock Garden, with the iconic spiral of the basalt rock wall a focal point in the overall design of the Botanic Garden. The spiral being a reminder of the connection between the natural and human-constructed elements of the garden, and representing the life force of the site itself.
This iconic spiral at the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden on Mount Tomah is made from basalt rock, which was formed between 17-14 million years ago during the middle Miocene period. The decorative feature of the walls, were constructed in a dry-stone manner. The hexagonal-shaped boulders are made from basalt, hewn onsite. The basalt is also responsible for the rich fertile soil in the garden.
Did you know that most of the Blue Mountains region is made from sandstone (such as can be seen in the escarpment at Katoomba, where the Three Sisters is one of the prominent landmarks). In the higher altitudes of the western Blue Mountains, including Mount Wilson, Mount Irvine, Mount Banks and Mount Tomah, basalt is a feature in the escarpment and landscape.
An igneous rock, the basalt was formed in the middle Miocene period, between 17 million and 14 million years ago, and is a remnant of a volcanic lava flow – hence the dark grey coloration.
