StenotritidaeCtenocolletes albomarginatus Ctenocolletes rufescens Leioproctus (Protomorpha) sp Stenotritus bee
This striking looking bee was dentified as a Stenotritus. This bee was retrieved from a salt-water swimming pool in Alice Springs. The Stenotritus bee belongs to a small family of bees found only in Australia — in the family Stenotritidae. Initially we thought it was deceased, but notice the abdomen was expanding and contracting. We left the bee to dry off and when we returned, it was gone (assuming it had flown off).
The stenotritids (family Stenotritidae) are large, densely hairy and fast-flying bees. They have unmodified mouthparts. They make simple burrows in the ground and firm, ovoid provision masses in cells lined with a waterproof secretion.
