Pictured here is the white form of the Tiny Purslane (Calandrinia pumila).

Belonging to the genus Calandrinia (also known as the parakeelyas), Australia has some 40 species of the 150 species worldwide, of which Central Australia and the Northern Territory have 11 species.

The following images appear to be the Tiny Purslane (Calandrinia pumila). These were found growing around the water-filled claypans south of Alice Springs.

It is a small delicate fleshy looking plant with mostly basal leaves, that vary from green to pink in colour. The flowers are approximately 3 to 5 mm across, on stems up to 10 cm long, and with 5 to 6 petals.

The flowers are normally a pale pink, lilac or pale purple in colour, although the following are a white form of the Tiny Purslane, discovered at the Ilparpa Claypans, that was filled with water at the time, having received an unusual amount of rain since the beginning of the year. For the flora enthusiasts, this ephemeral clay pan contains numerous flora species, especially evident this spring due to all the rainfall.
