Septermber was a busy month for these visitors, more then I have noticed in previous years. It’s not that they weren’t welcomed… but it did take some effort to stalk them with my mobile phone to get some pics…
The name of my visitors are the Lawson’s Night Moth, scientific classification Eudesmeola lawsoni, first described by Felder and Rogenhofer in 1874. Also commonly known as the Owlet Moth, it is a monotypic moth genus (“monotypic” describing a genus with a single species), and they are found across Australia, including the arid inland regions of Australia.
The adult moths are brown in colour made up of light and dark patterns across the wings. The overall colour ot the adult moths are variable and can appear dark or light brown. The underside of the wings are pale cream to brown with a broad light to dark brown submarginal band, and a dark spot in the middle of each wing. The wing span varies between adults, up to 7 cms.
