Adrian Jangala Robertson was born in 1962 in Papunya (an Australian Indigenous community), that is about 240 kilometres northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. A prominent Warlpiri artist from the Central Western Desert region, Adrian witnessed the witnessed the inception of the Western Desert painting movement, that was to influence his artistic journey. Adrian has been a member of the Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists and a vital part of the Mparntwe / Alice Springs art community.
Adrian made history as the first Aboriginal artist to be selected as a finalist in the 2024 Wynne, Sulman, and Archibald Prizes. Adrian’s art is characterised with the use of a restricted palette of colours and energetic brush work.
Adrian’s artwork displays his deep connection to Country and family. He presents a distinctive style to depict the desert mountains, ridges, hills trees and shrubs of his mother’s Country, Yalpirakinu (also known as Yuelamu), located northwest of Mparntwe.
