The Torresian Kingfisher (Todiramphus sordidus) are found in Australia and southern New Guinea. It is a medium sized kingfisher with a variable plumage pattern. They used to be called the Mangrove Kingfisher in Australia, but this was changed because there is already a bird by that name in East Africa.
There are three recognised subspecies:
- T. s. sordidus (found in the northern and north-eastern coasts of Australia, Aru Islands, southern coasts of New Guinea)
- T. s. pilbara (found along the coastal north-western region of Australia from Exmouth Gulf to the De Grey River in the Pilbara region)
- T. s. colcloughi (found along the central to south-eastern Queensland to the north-east New South Wales coast)
Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, mangroves, and plantations. It was formerly considered a subspecies of the collared kingfisher.
A tree kingfisher that hunts over low-tide mud and puddles.
