Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) are naturally associated around water and can be found in wetlands, river estuaries, bays and great lakes habitats. If the wetlands areas are permanent, it is thought that the Black Swans are sedentary and can inhabit the same locality throughout their life. However if the wetlands area dry out, they will migrate.
Research have discovered that the Black Swans are opportunistic in their response to rainfall and drought, being sighted in semi-arid region including Central Australia, where there are semi-permanent and permanent waterholes.
Black Swans have been sighted at locations such as 2 Mile in the West MacDonnell Ranges and Alice Springs Sewage Ponds.
