King Brown Snake (Pseudechis australis), also known as the Mulga Snake.
The Mulga Snake has triumphed in most regions of Australia, from the monsoon forests to black soil plains and rock habitats to the driest sandy deserts. It preys on a wide variety of vertebrates, including other snakes, frogs, lizards and mammals.
Capable of reaching massive proportions of over 3 metres in length, the highly venomous Mulga snake would not be considered as an animal in need of threat displays. Yet when alarmed the Mulga snake flattens its neck and raises its head, enlarging its apparent size to appear more formidable. In an attempt to deter an aggressor, a threatened snake may also hiss loudly and stage a mock attack.
While commonly called the ‘King Brown’ it is important to note that this snake is actually a member of the Black snake family. This is not an important detail for most people, but those envenomated by the Mulga snake will receive no alleviation of their symptoms from Brown snake anti-venom. Fortunately today, the venom found on a victim is used to identify the snake from which it came and the appropriate anti-venom group is then administered.
