How often have you been contacted via email by an individual or SEO service (SEO means 'search engine optimisation?) about your internet site:

your website is not not ranking on major search engines for many keywords related to your site.

then making you a promise:

we guaranteed to get your website on the first page of Google

It is a simple fact that no SEO company or individual can guarantee you a first page or top 10 ranking. The reason being that there are too many variables involved when ranking a website. Examples of the variables include the age of the domain, quality and quantity of the content, relevancy and quality of inbound links, other sites doing the same thing as your website (the competitors), and most importantly the ever-changing Google algorithms (that influence the resulting indexes provided by their search engine).

In Google's own words:

No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.

Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a "special relationship" with Google, or advertise a "priority submit" to Google.

So where do you start? Become an educated consumer. Read up about SEOs, how to determine the reputable SEOs from the non-reputable, and get familiar with how search engines work. The Google Webmaster Tools: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a great starting point. There are also some informative blogs and marketing guides that provide great reading. The Free Marketing Tips Blog has an article by David Jackson on How to Choose a Reputable SEO Company, plus some other informative content.

Finally, once you have read as much as your head can absorb and done what you need to do with your site content to make it relevant and search engine friendly, you are ready to start looking for ways to promote your website. Whilst there is still the traditional print media for advertising your business, the online space is where the money is, as more and more people do their research and searches on the internet.

Besides SEOs and Google AdWords, you can sell your advertising space to an advertising agency. Established sites may find that they are contacted by such services or agency, looking for advertising space for their clients. Whilst you can work with a local marketing and advertising agency, don't dismiss the overseas agencies, with some also having international representation across different continents and countries.
