Jurien Bay - Cities, Towns and Localities

Just 280 km north of Perth, is the coastal town of Jurien Bay, a popular fishing destination, with long sandy beaches, offshore reefs and islands, that provide home to crays and rock lobsters.

Besides fishing, some of the many other popular activities that are enjoyed by locals and visitors include swimming, snorkelling and diving, surfing and wind surfing, whale watching, experiencing the spectacular seasonal native wildflower display, exploring the surrounding national parks and nature reserves.

There is the Jurien Bay Marina, which offers a modern marina and service facilities for the central west coast fishing industry and for the recreational fishing boats.

Off shore is the Jurien bay Marine Park, protecting an important section of the marine waters between Wedge Island and Green Head. This region is like a temperate version of Ningaloo Reef with Australian Sealion breeding areas and a wide variety of sea and marine life.

Jurien Bay Attractions

Wildflowers in the West
• Western Australia is famed for the magnificent display of wildflowers that occur during certain seasons. Such is the popularity, there are specific tours and charters available for visitors to experience this annual phenomenon. Surrounded by national parks and nature reserves, you too can experience the beauty of the native flora. Contact the local visitor centre for more information.
Jurien Bay Marine Park
• Department of Environment and Conservation
• The Jurien Bay Marine Park, declared in August 2003, protects an important section of Western Australia’s central west coast between Wedge Island and Green Head. Jurien Bay, from which the marine park derives its name, provides a fascinating insight into what is described as a temperate version of Ningaloo Reef.

As well as being home to major sea lion and seabird breeding areas, the marine park contains biological communities that are populated with a mix of temperate and tropical plants and animals, courtesy of the Leeuwin Current. There are numerous colourful corals growing in the area (although they don’t form reefs) and the extensive limestone reefs that contain breathtaking grottos and overhangs providing a perfect diver’s experience. These reefs are covered with colourful sponges and sea squirts and provide a perfect habitat for a diverse variety of fish and other marine life, such as western rock lobsters. There is extensive seagrass meadows that provide shelter and a nursery habitat for these and many other species.
The Pinnacles
• Pinnacles Drv, via Nambung National Park
• Nambung National Park is just to the south of Cervantes, and approximately 42 km from Jurien Bay. It is home to the unique Pinnacles Desert, also known as the ‘Pinnacles’. The Pinnacles are an extraordinary formation of ancient limestone rock spires, some rising several metres high. Created millions of years ago from seashells that were broken down into sand and further eroded by water and wind. The Pinnacles Desert Discovery is an interpretive centre with displays that provide an insight into the natural processes that formed these amazing structures, as well as the biodiversity to be found in the park.
