Hyden - Cities, Towns and Localities
Promoted as ‘Bush Living at its Best’ the country town of Hyden is about 4 hours drive from Perth, along the Great Eastern Highway (Route 94). This wonderful spot is surrounded by natural attractions such as the world famous ‘Wave Rock’ and beautiful wildflowers, in the central-south wheat belt region.

The town derived its name from ‘Hyde’s Rock’. As the story goes, there was a sandalwood cutter living near ‘Hippo’s Yawn’ whose name was Hyde. The rock was named ‘Hyde's Rock’ after him, but when the Lands Department printed it out, it became ‘Hyden Rock’.

The region experiences a Mediterranean style climate, with cold winters and low rainfall. Temperatures are quiet pleasant all year round, with summer (December to February) maximum temperatures averaging around 34°C to a minimum average of 14°C. Winter (June to August) average maximum temperature is 14°C with an average minimum of 4°C. The winter rains providing the impetus for the spectacular spring flower displays.

• One of Australia's most famous landforms, The Wave on Hyden Rock is giant formation in the shape of a surf wave, carved of multi-coloured granite. Dating from over 2,700 million years ago, the wave is not a rock, but an overhanging wall stretching over 100 m long and rising over 15 m high. It is thought that the shape was caused by weathering of the rock when the area was once under the sea. The shape is further highlighted by vertical streaks of algae, growing on the surface and forming dark brown and black stains. The Wave is located just 4 km from Hyden, amongst a 160 ha natural reserve. You can walk the "Rock Walks" and the surrounding bushland.
Hyden Wildlife Park
• The park includes a variety of Australian animals and birds such as koalas, emus, wombats and "white kangaroos". Set in pristine bushland, there is also a wildflower shop.
Mulka's Cave • Bate's Cave
• Located only 20 minutes away from Wave Rock, the cave contains Aboriginal rock engraving dating some 30,000 years old. The engraving give an insight into how different the landscape was back then, with depiction of a sailfish and revealing tales of catching fish.

The name Mulka is derived from an Aboriginal legend. Mulka was the illegal son of a woman who had fallen in love with a warrior from another tribe with whom marriage was forbidden. As a result, she bore a son who was crossed eyed. The boy grew to be a strong man of some considerable height, however his crossed eyes meant that he could not aim his spear accurately. Out of frustration, he turned to catching and eating human children. It was said that he lived in what was called Bate's Cave, also known as Mulka's Cave, where you can see his hand imprints, higher than that of an ordinary man. When his mother berated him for his behaviour, Mulka killed her and fled south. The tribe of the district set out to track him down, catching up with him and killed him near Dumbleyung. His body was left to the ants as a warning to others who break the law.
