Geraldton Attractions

Houtman Abrohlhos Islands
• Geraldton provides the gate to the amazing Houtman Abrolhos archipelago of about 122 islands. Located only 70 km out to sea across the Geelvink Channel, the islands boast an incredible range of marine life, that include spectacular coral gardens and prolific fish life. The Abrolhos is also home to one of Australia's best sea bird breeding colonies, as well as a haven for a number of marine mammals including sea lions, dolphins and migratory whales.

The Abrolhos Islands is also rich in maritime history, such as the infamous Batavia wreck that lies on the ocean floor at the Wallabi Group of Islands. Wrecked in 1629, most of her crew and passengers survived, only to face a horrendous mutiny in which 125 men, women and children were slaughtered while awaiting rescue. A number of tours can be booked to these islands.

There is a particular emphasis on Abrolhos Islands maritime history. Here you can learn about murder and mutiny at the Abrolhos after the wreck of The Batavia, a Dutch East Indies Trading Ship, in 1629. Stories from other major wrecks include Gilt, Dragon, Zuytdorp and Zeewijk.
