Just a four hour drive from Melbourne is Mount Buffalo National Park. With superb 360 degree views from the summit of The Horn, this spectacular location above the Ovens Valley has been a popular holiday destination for many Victorians for over 100 years. With sheer imposing cliffs and huge granite tors, waterfalls, snow gums and wildflowers, this sub-alpine plateau is one of Victoria’s oldest national park.

Mount Buffalo is popular all year round, providing a cool retreat during summer and winter wonderland during summer. With over 90 km of walking tracks, spring and autumn makes a wonderful getaway, where visitors can enjoy the panoramic scenery or opt for some adventurous pursuits like rock climbing and hang-gliding.

The Horn Lookout offers some great opportunities for taking photographs, from daylight to night-time, and even on misty days.

From The Horn lookout, you can view on the horizon (from left to right) Mt Murray (1,634 m), Mt Sarah, Mt Selwyn, The Pinnacles (1,445 m), Mt Kent, Mt Wellington (1,565 m), Mt Darling, Snowy Plains, Wonnangatta Valley, The Viking, Howitt Plains, The Razor, Mt Howitt (1,742 m), Cross Cut Saw, Mt Speculation, Mt Lovick, The Bluff, Mt Cobbler, Mt Stirling, Mt Buller (1,804 m).

Mount Buffalo overlooks the Ovens Valley region through which flows the Ovens River. The Ovens River begins its journey in the Victorian Alps, flowing through the Ovens Valley past Bright, Myrtleford and Wangaratta where it joins the King River.

Some great tracks, picnic areas and lookouts include Eurobin Falls Track, Gorge Day Visitor Area, Grossmans Mill Picnic Area, The Horn Picnic Area and Lookout.

As you approach Mount Buffalo, it is the spectacular granite cliffs rising before you that are sure to impress. The fresh air, giant tors, gorges and waterfalls, combined with the views of the nearby alps provides some special moments and memories.

One of the lookouts you come to along the Mount Buffalo Road is the Mackeys Lookout.

Whilst there is no accommodation available in Mount Buffalo National Park, camping is permitted in the summer months at Lake Catani, plus a couple of remote camping sites.
