Sorrento - Cities, Towns and Localities

Sorrento Beachscape

Small, attractive, and fashionable, this resort town is named after the Italian town of the same name in the gulf of Naples in Italy. Together with Portsea, Sorrento is located at the end of the Mornington Peninsula.

Originally called Sullivans Bay the town had the first birth in Victoria of a European person and many other firsts including the first water supply including a public hospital and court house. The town boasts some great beaches, scenic walks, and great shopping.

Located at the southern end of the Mornington Peninsula, between Blairgowrie and Portsea, Sorrento inner shoreline faces into Port Phillip Bay, whilst the outer coastline faces out to the Bass Strait.

Sorrento Park and Sorrento Front Beach that looks out across the bay provides an ideal place to relax, have a picnic, take a swim, or just keep a watch out for the wild bottlenose dolphins that frolic in the bay.

The Bass Strait side of the peninsula includes craggy promontories, as well as sheltered bays and sandy beaches. This side allows for some surfing action, which can be had at Sorrento Ocean Beach, St Pauls Beach and Diamond Bay. Coppins Lookout has magnificent views and there are a number of walking tracks and picnic areas.

Other recreational activities in the area include golf, bush walks, sailing, boating, fishing and scuba diving. Mornington Peninsula National Park extends along the southern coastline and Ocean Back Beach.
