Melton - Cities, Towns and Localities
Located approximately 35 km west of the Melbourne CBD, Melton is considered part of the Greater Melbourne metropolitan area, although it is the administrative centre of the Shire of Melton local government area that embraces a number of townships and communities, the largest being Caroline Springs and Melton.

With its long history and heritage, there is plenty for the visitor to discover and learn about Melton's past. From the 'Kurung-jang-balluk' or 'People of the Red Gum', who were the earliest inhabitants of the Melton area, the impact on Melton from the discovery of gold in nearby Ballarat, and the naming of the town after the Melton Mowbray hunting grounds in England, a reminder that fox hunting was popular in the district.

Visitors should pop into the Melton visitor centre as they sometimes have an exhibitions display, as well as providing information about Melton and the surrounding region.

In addition to our listed online travel guide information, contact the local tourism visitor centre for your destination for more attractions, tours, local maps and other information.
