Whilst the iconic Great Ocean Road starts from
winds its way just east of Warrnambool,
the Great Ocean Walk weaves inland between
and Princetown. Visitors now have the opportunity to park the vehicle and take a
hike on the ‘Great Ocean Walk’, as it takes you along the rugged coastline, an
adventure that cannot be had from the confines of your vehicle.
Great Ocean Walk is one of those opportunities to experience the beauty of
west coast, stretching for some 104 km and taking in some of the spectacular
coast, that include rarely visited remote beaches, national parks, native flora and fauna, and local communities. There are many stunning sights to behold and experience along the walk,
as you take in the jagged coastline, the iconic Twelve Apostles, views over marine sanctuaries and the
graveyard of many a ship that struck this wild coast.
The walk can be done in stages or if time is short. It is one of those walks
that you can enter into along its length, especially if you want to enjoy the
comfort of any one of the many accommodation on offer in the area. There are short walks of
lengths under 3 hours, day walks or overnight treks. For those wanting to
experience pitching a tent for overnight stays, you can camp at any one of the
approved camping spots, just make sure you have
your camping permit (you will
need to apply at least 2-4 weeks in advance). There are also tours available
for those preferring this option.
Some of the wonderful Great Ocean Walk locations include the fishing village
of Apollo Bay (often marked as the start of the walk), Aire River Estuary, Cape
Otway Lighthouse and the
Otway National Park, Castle Cove, Johanna Beach and
views of the 12 Apostles.
‘There is so much about the Walk you don't expect to find
and with the track hugging the rugged coastline it takes hikers to places
rarely experienced,’ says Parks Victoria Ranger-in-Charge, Peter Burns
(Parks Victoria - Special Places -
Long Walks - Great Ocean Walk.
For those with the time, the Great Ocean Walk combined with the iconic
Ocean Road scenic drive, makes for an unforgettable experience and holiday.
