Moonlight Head - Cities, Towns and Localities

Located just off the iconic scenic drive of the Great Ocean Road, just down the road from Yuulong (about 7 km) is Moonlight Head and Wattle Hill. With towering cliffs and magnificent views, it is part of a section of coastline that includes an array of coastal landforms unique in the Shire of Otway and Victoria, a number of important fossil sites1 and Australites (glassy type of meteorite)2.

Moonlight Head overlooks the Twelve Apostles Marine National Park, Victoria’s second largest Marine National Park. The park extends out from the renowned Twelve Apostles and contains some of Victoria's most spectacular underwater scenic habitats. There are rich intertidal and subtidal invertebrate communities, dramatic underwater arches, canyons, fissures, gutters and deep sloping reefs.

There is also the secluded Wreck Beach, where you can view remnants from the Marie Gabrielle and Fiji. Although a difficult trek, it is a very special place. Extreme care need to be taken, so if you are going to do this walk, check the tide conditions with the local visitor centre.

Check out our listing of Moonlight Head accommodation, Great Ocean Walk accommodation, Great Ocean Road accommodation and Shipwreck Coast accommodation. In addition to our listed online travel guide information, contact the local tourism visitor centre for your destination for more attractions, tours, local maps and other information.

Moonlight Head Attractions

The Gable Lookout
From the Gables car park a short walk takes you to the Gable Lookout, with stunning coastal views around Moonlight Head.
Wreck Beach
This secluded beach has the Marie Gabrielle anchors when it was shipwrecked in 1869. There is also the anchor from the Irish barque Fiji3 on the beach. This ship was on a voyage from Hamburg to Melbourne, when poor weather and faulty navigational equipment caused the ship onto the reefs with the loss of 12 lives in 1891.

Access to the secluded Wreck Beach can be made either from The Gables car park, a nearly 2 hour return walk of over 2.6 km, that include 366 steps. This is a difficult walk and you need to be fit to complete the steps and return back up the steps.

The shorter walk is from Wreck Beach car park, but you still have the 366 steps. Distance approximately 700 metres, time taken at least 30 minutes.

For the Marie Gabrielle anchor you should add an additional distance of just over 800 m return, whilst for the Fiji you will need to add another 1.3 km return. Walkers are also advised to only do this walk during low tide and calm ocean conditions. It is dangerous to be there during large sea swells.

If you are going to do this walk, confirm details, including tide conditions with the local visitor centre.
