Richmond - Cities, Towns and Localities
Located only 25 km from Hobart in the Coal River Valley, is the Richmond Historic Village.

Coal was discovered in the early 1800s, and land grants issued to encourage settlement in the area. The building of Richmond Bridge in 1823, enabled easier travel to the east coast and the Tasman Peninsula. In 1824, the township of Richmond was named. The 1820s saw the building of the gaol, court house, barracks and a watch house, allowing Richmond to grow, due to its importance as a convict station and military post. Richmond’s location was ideal and soon saw many businesses established providing a variety of services.

Today there are many examples of Georgian buildings from that era, and with it’s close proximity to Hobart, Richmond is a popular destination with visitors, providing a great place to make your base from which to visit the surrounding region.

Visitors today can enjoy Richmond’s history as it is on the ‘Tasmania’s Convict Trail’, the village once being a key military post and convict station, strategically located between Hobart and Port Arthur. The convict buildings in Richmond predate those in Port Arthur.
