Yunta is a small, geographically isolated
rural community located on the Barrier Highway, 200 km west
and 85 km east of Peterborough. Established
in 1887 as a railway town on the Adelaide to
rail route, today, the town acts as a service centre for the
local community that numbers roughly 150, as well as
stop-over for travellers between
Sydney (Broken Hill
- Adelaide) to
route or to the tourist town of Arkaroola.
For those visiting
Arkaroola and the
Flinders Ranges, Yunta offers an alternate route to those destinations.
Current facilities include a telecentre/post office, two
roadhouses (one with a caravan site), public toilets (in the
Parking Bay) and a hotel. There is also a school, police
station, CFS and SA Ambulance, District Hall, tennis courts,
race course and an airstrip.
