Victor Harbor - Cities, Towns and Localities
Victor Harbor overlooks Encounter Bay and the Southern Ocean, an historic region that also boasts spectacular seascapes and land formations, with great wildlife such as the Little Penguin at Granite Island.

With its multitude of attractions, Victor Harbour is a great place to base yourself, enjoying the number of events that happen throughout the year, including the whale watching season (June to October), and the Fleurieu Fiesta, held throughout the Fleurieu Peninsula, celebrating the regions produce.

Victor Harbor Attractions

Below Decks Oceanarium

• Located just off the Screwpile Jetty, near Granite Island is a huge floating platform that allows you to descend safely under the water to see the marine life in its marine environment. There are many types of sharks, stingrays and other local species.
Granite Island Recreation and Nature Park

• Granite Island is located off Victor Harbor. Popular with visitors to the region, you can take a horse-drawn tram from Victor Harbor across to Granite Island along the causeway that connects the island to the mainland. As well as the historical and cultural significance for the Ngarrindjeri people, being included in the Dreaming of Ngurunderi, it also has historical and heritage significance to the Europeans.

Home to some 700 Little Penguins, there is a Penguin Centre on the island. Other attractions include the walks around the island, a cafe, kiosk, souvenir shop and public facilities. contact the local visitor centre or check the website for information about Penguin Tours.
South Australia Whale Centre

• The building was first used as a railway goods shed in the late 1800s, in later times in than housed the famous horse trams that ran along the causeways to Granite Island. The trams now have a shed of their own. The buildings new lease of life (since 1994) is as the South Australia Whale Centre.
SteamRanger Heritage Railway

• The SteamRanger Heritage Railway operates a number of different heritage steam and diesel hauled tourist trains between Mt Barker in the Adelaide Hills, up over the crest of the southern Mt Lofty Ranges, down to Strathalbyn and on through the coastal holiday towns of Goolwa and Port Elliot to the tourist resort town of Victor Harbor.
Southern Right Whale Nursery
• July to August
• Whale watching occurs around July to August, when southern right whales return to the sheltered bays to calve and mate. The southern right whales are often seen within 100 metres of shore. Victor Harbour is also home to a colony of little (or fairy) penguins.

• The popular Farm Produce Market where you get to taste and buy the local produce. The market is a showcase of the region, including a great selection of local wines.
Whale Watching Season

• The annual migration of the Southern Right Whales is part of the popular events calendar, as tourist plan their holidays to include a bit of whale watching. Occurring between June and October, the Southern Right Whales return to the waters of Encounter Bay. During the whale watching season, you can ring the ‘Whale Info Hotline’ for the latest information on whale sightings.
