Robe Attractions

Cape Dombey Obelisk / The Robe Obelisk
• The obelisk was erected on Cape Dombey in 1852 and used to navigate the entrance to Guichen Bay. It assisted passing ships with navigation because its height of 12 m (40 ft) made it visible 20 km (12 miles) out to sea. The obelisk also stored rocket lifesaving equipment. The firing of rockets was for carrying baskets to distressed ships to bring passengers ashore, and was to save many lives.

The obelisk will eventually fall into the sea as the land surrounding it is being eroded by natural forces.
Chinese Monument
• A Chinese Monument was erected on the Robe foreshore to commemorate the landing of over 16,500 Chinese, who having left China, landed at Robe and walked 400 kms from Robe to the Victorian Goldfields between 1857 and 1863.

See the District Council of Robe for more information on the Chinese Invasion - Guichen Bay to Canton Lead: The Chinese Trek to Gold, by Fiona Ritchie.
Customs House
• Open Tuesday and Saturday - 2 pm to 4 pm / Monday to Saturday - 2 pm to 4 pm (January only)
• Built in 1863 and situated on Royal Circus, this was the heart of the business and administrative and the junction of major trade routes for the South East region. Today, it is a museum.
Old Gaol
• The Old Gaol in Robe constructed in 1860/61 held prisoners until 1870, when it was closed. It was reopened in 1872, but finally closed in 1881. The walls were reinforced with steel boiler plates from the wreck of the SS Admella. Only half of the original design was constructed, housing male prisoners. A duplicate half on the southern side of the main entrance was to be built at a later date for female prisoners. Restoration work during 1995 helped rebuild the walls. It is open for visitors to explore and learn some of Robe's history.
