Penola - Cities, Towns and Localities
Penola is an historic town located at the southern end of the Coonawarra/Penola wine district in South Australia. With over 20 cellar doors all within 20 km of each other, Penola offers a great place from which to base yourself when exploring the region.

As well as the ‘State Heritage Area’ of Petticoat Lane, Penola's other claim to fame is the schoolhouse where Australia’s first saint taught children. There is also the Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre. The visitor information centre houses the Penola & District Local History Collection.

Penola Attractions

Petticoat Lane
• As a historic town, visitors can wander through Petticoat Lane, the oldest residential part of Penola. Listed as a ‘State Heritage Area’, the historic timber and stone cottages still retain their charm and character of yesteryear.
Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre
• Portland St, PENOLA Ph: 08 8737 2092
• The Blessed Mary MacKillop, together with Father Julian Tenison Woods, founded the religious order, The Sisters of St. Joseph, here in Penola on the 19th March, 1866. With was also here, a year later that the Woods MacKillop Schoolhouse was established for the children of the area.

Opened in 1998, The Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre provides the opportunity for visitors to experience where it all began.
Nangwarry Forestry & Logging Museum

• Open Sunday, Public Holidays and by appointment.
• With forestry being one of the largest industries in South Australia, Forestry SA manages approximately 64,000 hectares of commercial timber production in the South East of South Australia. The museum with its award winning display and interpretive centre, provides exhibits that cover all aspects of the timber industry to be found in the Limestone Coast region.

There are an array of mill machinery and artefacts, an original Bedford fire truck, a forest fire truck, a drag saw, swing saw, 2-man chainsaw, a restored crane truck, replica of the single men's quarters, historical maps and priceless photographs from a bygone era.
