Minlaton - Cities, Towns and Localities
Located near the bottom end of the Yorke Peninsula, the township of Minlaton is just 197 km west of Adelaide and is the main service centre for the surrounding rural districts.

Originally called ‘Gum Flat’, it is the only area of the Southern Yorke Peninsula where red gums are found growing naturally. The town was changed to ‘Minlaton’ which is derived from the local Aboriginal word ‘minlacowie’ meaning ‘sweet water’.

The area was settled in the 1870s by farmers who found conditions ideal for growing cheat and barley crop, as well as raising sheep. The township promotes itself today as ‘The Barley Capital of the World’.

It also has the Red Devil Memorial, across the road from a wildlife park. Captain Harry Butler bought the Red Devil monoplane from Britain after being a decorated World War I pilot. Butler’s crossing from Adelaide to Minlaton with the mail on 6 August, 1919, is claimed to as the first plane flight across any sea in the southern hemisphere.
