Coonawarra - Cities, Towns and Localities
Just under 380 km south-east of Adelaide and less than 425 km west of Melbourne, the Coonawarra region is a popular destination by wine lovers.

Sometimes referred to as Australia’s ‘other Red Centre’, the Coonawarra is renowned as one of Australia's great wine regions, that produces world class red wines, such as the Cabernet Sauvignon. With more than 24 wineries, most offering cellar door outlets, the region is a haven for those seeking a wine tasting escape and an excuse to stock up their own collection, if the bottles make it home.

Located in the Limestone Coast region of the Wattle Range Council, there is plenty to see and do beyond that of cellar doors and wine tasting. Stretching from the wild coastlines, unique wetlands, conservation areas, national park, and even underground wonders from yesteryear, there is sure to be something for everyone.

Just down the road is the historic town of Penola, with its ‘State Heritage Area’ of Petticoat Lane and the starting point for many a pilgrimage for those following the footsteps of Australia's first Saint, Mary MacKillop. It is here at the Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre that visitors are provided the opportunity to experience where it all began.
