Normanton - Cities, Towns and Localities
Normanton is a small port town on the Norman River that once boomed when gold was discovered nearby at Croydon in the early 1890's. A train line, now known as the "Gulf Lander" was built to service the goldfields. The gold soon petered out and the other major industry in the area, cattle went with it as other train lines south of Normanton provided better transport routes.

The second oldest town in the Gulf, Normanton is the government and administrative centre for the Carpentaria Shire. Tourism, prawning and fishing are now the major industries in the town.

As a tourist town, it is one of the destinations on the amazing Highway One tourism drive. Normanton has a few impressive buildings that were built during the gold rush era. One of the first stops should be the Normanton Visitor Information Centre and Library located at the northern end of town. Here you can get a "Town Walk" brochure to discover the history of Normanton in the 30 historic sites.

The Gulflander and Railway Station
• A fascinating and unique experience to passengers, the Gulflander travels through some of the most remote and inaccessible countryside on the Queensland map. 140km to Croydon each week. Opened in 1891 to join Normanton to the teeming Croydon goldfields, the line has never been linked to the main Queensland Rail network. Download Schedule and Fares.
Krys - The Savannah King
• There are a number of "big crocodiles" in Australia, such as the "Big Boxing Crocodile" on the Arnhem Highway in the Northern Territory's Humpty Doo and Wyndham's Big Croc in Western Australia. Visitors to Normanton can sit with Krys, the 8.6 metre replica of a saltwater crocodile with a girth of 13 feet.

It was the famous husband and wife team Ron and Krystina Pawlowski that hit the headlines when in 1957 that Kris Pawlowski with a single shot killed the monster croc on the banks of the Norman River near Normanton. At 28 feet four inches long, it was the biggest crocodile ever shot in Australia. Kris was to later regret the kill, saying "I would never shoot one like that again. It was such a magnificent specimen".

Both Kris and her husband Ron Pawlowski were from Poland, emigrating to Australia after enduring the hardship of World War Two. As penniless immigrants in Australia, they were to finally base themselves in the remote corner of Queensland's Gulf of Carpentaria, becoming crocodile hunters. After establishing themselves as crocodile hunters, with Kris big kill winning her a mention in the Guinness Book of Records, they turned conservationists, when they realised that the species was endangered.
