An important park near Rockhampton the Mt Etna Caves are
home to a huge colony of Bent Wing Bats approximately
400,000 in total. The area is littered with over 100
limestone caves, many with bat colonies in them.
cleft is a large split in the rock where the bats fly out at
dusk on the warm air currents to forage for food. A torrent
of bats explodes from the cleft at dusk to completely
smother the light as they all try to leave at once. Tours
are available the location is somewhat isolated and it is
recommended only for reasonably fit adults.

before entering any of the caves. Camping is not permitted.
