Dinosaur Trail - Queensland, AustraliaAustralia's Dinosaur Trail in Queensland's Outback is an exciting adventure that takes you back into time, when prehistoric dinosaurs roamed the earth. Visitors can discover the world-class fossils of Winton, Richmond and Hughenden. As you journey along the Dinosaur Trail, you will encounter a range of unique experiences not available anywhere else in the world.

In Winton at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs, home to the world's largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils, you can book on the morning tour and and see the Fossil Preparation Lab and the plans for the future. The museum has the exciting new 3D digital theatre with animations of Australian dinosaurs; see the expanded range of dinosaur merchandise; have lunch or coffee and cake at the Café with its superb mesa country view.

Then about 110 km south west of Winton, is the Lark Quarry Conservation Park, in the heart of red-earth and Spinifex country, and magnificent views of broken escarpments and flat top mesas. It is here at Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways that you can book on a guided tour to see the worlds only existing record of a dinosaur stampede. The tour interprets the Trackways from creation to discovery and display.

For those travelling along the Marine Fossil Byway to Richmond, you will need a 4WD or check road conditions before departing. At Richmond you can start your visit at Kronosaurus Korner, where you can view Australia's most exciting marine fossil display of creatures that inhabited the Cretaceous Inland Sea that covered a large section of Queensland 120 million years ago. After you have explored Kronosaurus Korner you can head out to one of the dedicated fossicking sites to try and find a fossil of your own! Any finds can be taken back to Kronosaurus Korner to be identified by the Kronosaurus Korner staff.

From Richmond you follow the Flinders Highway to Hughenden. At the Flinders Discovery Centre you can step back in time with the exhibition of dinosaur fossils from around the world and a growing display of fossils from the local area. You can also meet 'Hughie' the 7 metre skeletal Muttaburrasaurus and enjoy the amazing light and sound show that takes you back over 500 million years to the beginning of the formation of Porcupine Gorge National Park.

Fossil Facts

The scientific evidence from the Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways assisted in the creation of the stampede scene in Steven Spielberg's movie, "Jurassic Park".

Arguably the most famous resident of Winton, Elliot (a Sauropod), at the time was once the largest dinosaur ever to be found in Australia. The discovery of his remains was a significant milestone in Australia's palaeontological research, and was the beginning of the Australian Age of Dinosaurs.

In 1989 near Richmond, an almost complete fossil was discovered of a small plant eating dinosaur - an ankylosaur. Named Minmi, it is Australia's most complete and best preserved dinosaur skeleton, dated to around 100 million years old. It was discovered with much of its fossilised skin intact, as well as some of its stomach contents.

The largest fossil on display at Kronosaurus Korner is the 13 metre Kronosaurus and the smallest is a brittle star measuring around 10 mm.

One of Hughenden star attraction is "Hughie", a life size 7 metre, skeletal replica, of a Muttaburrasaurus. Hughie was cast from the original bones of a 110 million year old dinosaur found in the Flinders Shire.
