Dalrymple National Park - Cities, Towns and Localities
Small park covering some 1600ha dissected by Queensland's largest and moodiest river the Burdekin. Also home to the few remains of what is north Queensland's first surveyed inland town. Dalrymple was first settled in 1864 with the discovery of gold at nearby Cape River and Gilbert River. The town at one stage had 5 hotels and many other businesses.

In 1870 the moody Burdekin River flooded and virtually destroyed the entire town. Gold was then discovered at Charters Towers and later Ravenswood. The residents decided not to tempt the Burdekin floods and moved house. Today there is very little left of what was once a thriving gold mining settlement. Some graveyards and few pavements is all.

Access to the park is via the Gregory Development Rd about 46km north of Charters Towers. Camping is by permit only.

The park protects many native birds and animals that make a living along the river. Mt Keelbottom is located here as are sections of the basalt lava flows that are famous in this area. The Toomba lava flow creating the Great Basalt Wall can easily be seen as it snakes its way across the countryside.
