The City of Cairns is the international gateway into the Tropical
Far North Queensland.
Established in 1885, Cairns for most of its existence was no larger than 51.5 sq
km, with much of the metropolitan area being located in what was then the Shire
of Mulgrave. The Shire amalgamated into Cairns in 1995, along with other small
parts of neighbouring shires. In 2008, the Shire of Douglas merged with Cairns
to become the Cairns Regional Council.
The main community centres of Cairns and the larger metropolitan areas
include Miriwinni, Babinda, Bramston Beach, Gordonvale, Edmonton, the Cairns CBD
with its fabulous Esplanade precinct and swimming Lagoon, the Northern Beaches
suburbs, Mossman, Port Douglas, and the beachside communities of Wonga, Newell
