Birdsville - Cities, Towns and Localities
This icon of the Australian outback was originally named Diamantina Crossing in 1881. The name was changed to Birdsville in 1885 it is believed because the local billabong was home to such a huge variety of native birdlife. The township lies between the Simpson Desert and the gibber plains of Sturt's Stony Desert. It is also the beginning of the famous Birdsville Track.

The main attraction each year is the horse race meetings Birdsville Races held the first Friday and Saturday each September drawing huge crowds of over 5,000 to this small town with a regular population of only 120 souls. The first Birdsville race was conducted in 1886.

The Birdsville pub another outback icon was constructed in 1884 from local materials. It has been twice on fire and is one of the few remaining original buildings.
