It is estimated that there are approximately 200 species of Goodenia, most of which are found in Australia. Of these, there are approximately 21 species are in Central Australia / Northern Territory.

Easily recognised, the flowers have two upper petals and 3 lower petals, all having a frill-like wings. Whilst there are a number of blue flowering varieties, most are yellow.

Some of the yellow-flowering Goodenia species found in Central Australia are Goodenia lunata (Hairy goodenia), G. fascicularisG cycloptera and G. heterochila (Serrated goodenia).
