The prominent five ribs and a beaked operculum flower cap of the Red-bud Mallee (Eucalyptus pachyphylla) makes this an beautiful mallee. When the pale yellow flower appears from under the operculum, the cap-like cover then falls away to reveal an unfurling flower in all its glory.
The Red Mallee has large woody fruits which are used by Aboriginal children as spinning tops. The Arrernte name: Alhelpe (pronounced: a~LULL~pa).
