Don Bradman Museum - Bowral

Once a wealthy retreat for those wanting to enjoy city the close proximity of Sydney whilst living in the country, Bowral is now a getaway destination for many Sydneysiders and close enough for a weekend drive.

Located in a valley at the foot of Mount Gibraltar, 661 metres above sea-level, Bowral is on land formerly granted to John Oxley, one of New South Wales more famous early explorers. Farmed for a generation by his sons, until the coming of the railway in the 1860s. The Oxleys then subdivided part of the land for a private village, from which Bowral grew.

Prior to Oxley, the area was traversed as early as 1798, when the ex-convict John Wilson and his party were sent south by Governor Hunter to bring back information about the southlands, in the hope to discourage convicts who were escaping and heading south, in the mistaken belief that China was only 150 miles away. There were other expeditions into the district over the decade including that of John Warby and George Caley, a botanical collector for Joseph Banks.

Bowral was gazetted as a municipality in 1886, and within 20 years the town had over 1,000 citizens.
