Diving in Australia
There are some fantastic diving locations to be found around Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific, including wonderful opportunities for those not so adventurous such as snorkelling. The Great Barrier Reef is without peer when it comes to diving and diversity of marine life. We have grouped together a growing list of scuba dive and associated specialists on this page to assist you in planning your dive holiday.

New South Wales

Lord Howe Island Group
• Separated from the mainland by over 600 kms of deep ocean, the waters surrounding Lord Howe Island contain an mix of tropical and temperate marine species. This unique marine environment is breathtaking to view. Some dive sites include: Gower's Pinnacle, Rupert's Reef, and Malabar/Landslide.

Port Stephens • Rocky Headlands
• Dramatic coastline dominated by Tomaree Head stretching to Broughton Island. The place to scuba dive is off Halifax Point, where you will see large sponges, blue gropers, sea urchins and other abundant marine life. One of the best shore dives in New South Wales lies protected within the 'Fly Point-Halifax Park Aquatic Reserve'. There are a number of other dives including a swim through Looking Glass Isle, near Broughton Island.

Sydney underwater Bushwalking Society (SUBS)
• A non-profit making social diving and snorkelling club for gay men and lesbians and their friends in Sydney and beyond. The club was formed in 1993, and has grown to around 90 members. Membership is open to gay men and lesbians and their friends with a common interest in diving or snorkelling. We dive at least twice a month in and around Sydney, and include several trips per year to dive on the North and South Coasts. Our dive days include both shore and boat dives. Check out our dive calendar for a list of dives planned for the next month or so. The dive calendar indicates which dives are also suitable for snorkellers.

Queensland offer some great tropical diving experience, especially in and around the region of the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Group of Islands.
Heron Island
• This is the place for serious diving and coral snorkelling, with perfect white-sand coral cay and surrounded by fantastic lagoons. With the deep sea channel between Heron Island and Wistari Reef, it offers calm waters in which to explore the edge of the cay, boasting 21 recognised dive sites.
Lady Elliot Island
• The first coral cay on the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, visitors to the island can step off the beach to snorkel, swim and dive in one of the world’s richest marine eco-systems.
Lizard Island
• Renowned for the diving, where you can come face to face with a huge curious Potato Cod, at the world famous ‘Cod Hole’, who will swim right up close to inspect you with child-like curiosity, as well as amazing Moray Eels and dazzling tropical fishes. You can snorkel just off the beach or go to the outer reef for deeper waters. Lizard Island offers full Scuba Diving facilities including equipment and courses.

• Surrounded by fringing reefs, with a range of mid-shelf reefs nearby.
